Pepper Gallery — Freshness for your Mint 1:13 pm
With the growing amount of Pepper for Shaun Inman’s Mint, I’ve decided there really needs to be a Pepper Gallery. There’s been a thread about the idea over on the Mint Forum, incase you’re interested.
Here’s the design I’ve been playing with (sized down, of course): PepperMint
Now before I can start development, a few things need to be decided. So I’m throwing some questions out to the public, give me suggestions on:
- Name ideas
- What the backend should be ran on
- Thoughts the design I’ve got going so far
- Any other suggestions
OK, shoot.
I eat food. I listen to music. I sleep. Sometimes. I drink lots of coffee. I make pretty pictures. I talk to people. I believe in things. I write stuff. I take photographs. I have a laughing addiction. I am human.
why not expressionengine. is not free, but verry good. is from pmachine.com
My advice is on your Nike shoes: Do it. Get a site up and running before someone else does. You seem to know how to code things so if you need to change it later - no problem…
You should definitely do something in the mean-time. Spice Rack is cool - just be sure to give Kitta credit!
By the way, expression engine is pretty good - and yes free. PHP seems to work quite well for the back end, and great start on the design so-far. Just try to stay clear of something Shaun may come up with for his site and find a way to seperate yours from his esthetically. And don’t let the fact that he is planning an upgrade to discourage you, just as Apple has their widget gallery, there are tons of others ones as well like Konfabulator.com which are just as sweet, if not better.
Cheers!
Peter
I’ve been thinking of how I can make the design Minty without using too much of Mint’s design. Originally I was going to use a lot of the Mint design, but now that Shaun’s making one he probably wouldn’t appreciate me using his design elements for another gallery…
ExpressionEngine is NOT, in fact, free. Drupal can certainly do whatever you want, but it will almost certainly take a nontrivial amount of time to wrap your head around theming it. Push-templated CMSs don’t easily relinquish full layout control. I could be of (somewhat limited) help in this department, if you end up going with Drupal.
Regarding style, you could abandon the Mint concept and focus only on Pepper. Black and white rather than green and white, high-contrast rather than muted, etc etc.
Actually, that’s a pretty good idea…
It could be a developer’s resource as well as a resource for people to download things. I think that a good name for that type of thing would be “Peppermill” because it would connote, to a degree, both making something (peppers) as well adding spice to something (mint).
As far as the design goes, I like the idea abou abandoning the mint style and focusing on the colors of pepper. However, instead of confining yourself to black and white, remember that peppercorns come in various, lovely colors such as brown and red and green.
Use WordPress. You will never go wrong with that. Its skinning and management are so simple yet it’s really powerful. It’ll be more or less like a blog.
@Oliver: I do love WordPress (this blog is WP), but I’m not sure that it would work for this….
Hi all!
Such is life.
