Why I switched to Dreamhost 2:51 pm

As I mentioned a few days ago, I switched hosts. I told you I’d give you some more information on that, so here goes.

Like the title suggests and like so many other people are doing, I switched to Dreamhost, and it’s hard to believe everybody isn’t switching.

I mean take a look at their shared plans. As of writing this, they are offering 20 GB of disk space (plus it increases weekly by 160 megs), 1 TB of bandwidth (and it increases weekly by 8 gigs), 3000 email addresses, unlimited domains, unlimited subdomains, unlimited MySQL databases, PHP4 and PHP5 support, Ruby on Rails…The list goes on. See for yourself.

As if that’s not enough, it’s only $9.95 a month, about $120 a year, or about $190 for two years (only $7.95 a month)! And if you sign up for at least a year, the setup fee is waved.

Oh yeah, you get a free domain, too.

So that’s why I switched, and I’m pretty happy with Dreamhost so far. Imagine all the stuff I could do with that bandwidth…Maybe I’ll have to start a podcast or something. Who knows.

Now incase there are some of you reading this who still aren’t quite convinced that Dreamhost is the way to go, I’ve got one more thing to tell you.

If you sign up for a full hosting plan and enter “ELLIOTHERE” as a promo code, you’ll get $20 off.

Aren’t I nice.

Wow, that really is a sweet deal. I should keep it in mind for future reference.

By the way, the link to Elliot Swan Designs in your footer isn’t functional. You’re missing “.com” at the end. Just thought I’d let you know.

Whoops. I should probably fix that..

that reminds me… have you voted for them to add a live streaming server?

    Don’t remember…I’ll have to check.

    hear hear.
i’ve been with Dreamhost for about a year now, and they’re great.
i recommend them to all my friends (but always forget that special code thing… note to self!)

  • Oliver Zheng March 14th, 2006 @ 6:58 pm (#)

I’ve been looking around for a good solid host too, as mine will dry up in a month. Keep us updated on the host — any trouble or problems you are having. Dreamhost is at the top of my list for the new host and I’ll definitely remember to use that coupon!

  • Elliot Swan March 14th, 2006 @ 7:42 pm (#)

@Oliver: I’m liking them so far. I did have to change some of my includes (dreamhost doesn’t do includes by url, have to use paths), and I’ve noticed that often it takes longer from the time an email is sent through the email form to the time it gets to my inbox, I’m guessing because more emails are being sent out through dreamhost or something.

Support has responded fairly quickly for the amount of requests they get (I’ve gotten responses within a few hours). When I setup my free dreamhosters subdomain, it took a lot longer to set up than they said, but when I registered another domain I believe it was ready for use the same day. Databases often take a day before they are finished being set up, though.

All in all, and fairly happy and glad I’m using them. All I have to do is just think about that bandwidth…

Congrats on the switch to dreamhost! I’m still really happy that I switched. I just realized I didn’t have your feed in my bloglines and hadn’t seen your site in a while. For some reason when I was setting up for CSS Naked Day I remembered Adam Sandler’s “Stop Looking at me, SWAN!” quote from Billy Madison and I remembered that I hadn’t been keeping up. Glad to see you’re naked too. :-P

  • Elliot Swan April 5th, 2006 @ 10:12 am (#)

So much nakedness…It’s surprising how many sites are still useable like this.

[...] Visual PageRank View–Cool little tool. Except now after using it, I see how messed up my PR really is. Look for yourself. “Why I switched to Dreamhost” is a PR 6, but my homepage is only 3? Wha..? [...]

I'm a nice guy, so I'll let you use basic XHTML such as <a>, <strong>, <em>, <blockquote>, and <code>. If you're trying to share some code with us, just make sure to run it through Postable first.
